I found RightStart Math while choosing a the core homeschool curriculum Moving Beyond The Page. I loved the fact how detailed RightStart Math was in consideration to facts, explanations and games and also that there was an in-depth teachers manual for each level that explained step-by-step how to teach the subject at hand even if you are not very good at math.
Azzy was 5 years old and we began with Level A. Ami is 5 and we won’t begin this program with him until 6-months-1 year from now. The levels available range from A to H (recently released).
The primary learning tool is the AL Abacus (I had no clue how to use this until teaching my daughter). It is a specially designed two-sided abacus that is both kinesthetic and visual. The AL Abacus is grouped in fives and tens for quick recognition of quantities. Azzy picked up on this like it was second-nature. I found sometimes it took me longer to understand this new method than her, but I greatly wish I was taught math this way. The second side of the AL Abacus teaches place values up to the thousands.
Who likes homework? Not most people, but practice makes perfect and that is done through the provided math card games. No more pages of review worksheets and eliminating stressful flash cards that only teach children to memorize instead of understanding the process. These games are interesting and provide varied repetition that is needed for the automatic responses to the facts.
The RightStart Math homeschool second edition is set up with levels instead of grades, so that the child can begin at the proper level and advance at their own pace. I really liked this! I found myself and often listened to others think or being told my child is “advanced” “learning too slow” “is falling behind” “not at grade level in x subject”! Bull-freaking-baloney! That is where public school fail miserably. Each child enters into Kindergarten at a different level depending on what they are exposed to at home. Each child learns at different pace. Each child likes/dislikes certain subjects. Each teacher is different and one does not fit all. Rant over. Placement testing is available here. Objectives, Table of Contents and sample lessons can reviewed here.
If RightStart Math interest you, fantastic. I only have experience with Second Edition, but My partner and I absolutely love it and would recommend it to everyone whether you full-time homeschool or are looking for supplemental lessons. There is a 60-day money back guarantee available to everyone and discount for missionary families, military and first responders!
